The New South Jazzmen (Playing at the Saturday Valentines Dance)
New South Jazzmen includes six musicians who have brought their diverse musical backgrounds together to recreate the sounds of the 1920’s and 30’s. The upright bass of Lee Pittillo along with the banjo of Jerry Winkle and drums of Bill McSweeney, Sr. drive the band’s renditions of tunes that were all the rage of a bygone era. The traditional front line of trumpet, trombone, and clarinet makes the combination of upper and lower Mississippi sounds complete. Stephan Berry’s mastery of the trumpet is clear when he strokes the stars with his singing high notes while the laid back style of Neale Baugh’s clarinet compliments the tailgate hum of Bill McSweeney, Jr’s slide trombone.
All in all, the “front line” of New South Jazzmen blends harmony and blue notes to create a Dixieland feeling that fits perfectly with special events. Combining a light easy touch for quiet gatherings and heart felt movement for those more lively affairs makes The New South Jazzmen ideal for a memorably musical experience.

Blues music has been in Rat’s life since he was a kid. His first concert was James Cotton, at the age of 13. He grew up listening to the greats like Stevie Ray Vaughn and B. B. King. When he learned how to blues dance, it brought a whole new appreciation for the music. When Rat came to Charleston he had just fell in love with the dance and wanted to do it as often is possible. He coined the name for the local blues dance group: “Holy City Blues.” Rat has DJed for swing for over four years and also DJed for the “blues room” bi-weekly, when it was open at the CSDA’s weekly dance. He enjoys playing everything from the staples to more contemporary songs. The only struggle Rat has is choosing what songs he should dance to, and which ones he should take a break during! (Good thing there’s slow blues!)
Steven Duane of Charleston
Stephen Duane has been a dancer in Charleston for a little over 6 years and a professional dance instructor for the past 5 years. He enjoys dancing all styles of Ballroom dance but his true passion is Lindy Hop. His grandfather was a Big Band musician, so Stephen has the rhythms of Swing running through his veins. Stephen has DJ'd for the local Charleston Swing scene at JB Pivots, Henry's Bar,Lindy Loves Soul and Majestic Grill. He was also a favorite at the past four Charleston Lindy Exchanges. The local dancers like his eclectic style as he's known to play classic Jazz standards as well as Groovy Blues. Jim Wheatley from Atlanta
Jim Wheatley from Atlanta, GA has DJed numerous local Swing Events and Lindy Exchanges throughout the country. He was also co-founder of the Atlanta Lindy Exchange. But even before he started DJing swing and Lindy events or dancing those styles, Jim was listening to and loving Classic Soul Music. That love became evident as long as a decade ago when, in the midst of the neo-swing movement, he still managed to pepper his playlists with tunes from the likes of James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Junior Walker. Since then, as the acceptance of Soul Music into the dance community has increased, Jim has had the opportunity to DJ more soul sets, including an Atlanta event known as “The Vinyl Experience,” where he plays soul music on all vinyl! He also DJed at the inaugural Swing & Soul event in Atlanta, and at 2009’s MezzJelly Soul event in Dallas. Jim will be offering up some tasty soul sets, including tracks from the Motown, Stax, Chess, Atlantic and Philly Soul vaults, as well as some of the best of the new retro-Soul movement.
Travis Willert from Charleston, SC.
Travis has been dancing for 5 years in the norther Colorado region and is a new addition to the Charleston scene where he has recently become a professional dance instructor. Travis' passion for music overflows into every part of his life and by his own admission when he puts together the perfect play-list it actually makes him "giddy". With Travis DJing your sure to hear a good mix of the classics as well as some new alternative music. Hopefully you will dance a song that makes you invent a new new move or just loose the world around you, but most of all, have fun! The only thing he asks is that the follows, save him a dance!
